Grateful

My new album, Grateful, exists at the intersection of art, activism, and ancestry and proposes responses to social, political, and economic forces that shape our lives. Written and recorded in 2024 after a five-year pause from songwriting, the ten-track project marks a shift in my creative approach. Inspired by artist Zak Ové’s reflection that he tries ‘not to bleed on the canvas but to propose solutions,’ I have sought to bring my full self — feminist scholar, artist, mother, and woman — to all of the lyrics and offer solutions based on those experiences.

Similarly, my other three full-length albums Fire Woman (2020), Bloom (2009) and Free Dome: South Africa (2002) are each a summation of my synthesis of Black feminist theories and methodologies, and Black women’s art-making practices.
