Bricolage

I wanted to explore blackness and freedom by making art in a medium that is new to me. My approach to the three pieces below was based on a Jamaican proverb that was often told to me by my maternal grandmother: “Everything you need is right here.” Guided by this saying, I only used everyday materials sourced from my home: cardboard packaging for socks, left over paint, receipts from store purchases, a grocery flyer, a theatre program, a glue stick, masking tape, double-sided tape, a candle, origami paper, gold sequins, markers, scraps of handmade paper, and cardboard boxes I brought groceries home in.
