Short Videos
I collaborated with technologist Aljumaine Gayle to create a series of four experimental, photo-based, short videos completed in September 2024 and described below. As the autoethnographer, I selected images and/or texts from research site visits and personal archives and wrote some new text.
Digital Dust
Digital Dust explores loss, memory, and technology through photographs that I took at home. The idea for the video came while I frustrated by the loss of 86 images that I forgot to download after a research trip to Jamaica.
Gizzada
Based on photographs I took on a research site visit to Accompong, Jamaica on January 6, 2024 – the day of the residents’ annual celebration of the signing of the 1739 Peace Treaty in which Maroons were granted 1500 acres of land by the British.
Her Flowers
There were moments, while standing on my maternal familial lands in the Jamaican countryside, that I was struck by its rich history as expressed through the lush vegetation existing alongside the graves of my ancestors and the homes of my living relatives.
Black Cake
The imagery in this video is based on photographs that I took on research site visits to the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre, Black Cultural Centre, and Africville in Nova Scotia in August 2023.
