SPECIAL ISSUES
Black Futures and Freedoms was edited by Lisa Karen Cox and me, and is issue 198 of the publication Canadian Theatre Review. The issue offers a panoramic view of trends, seeded conversations, and aspirations for the direction of the art form from the perspectives of Black practitioners, academics, and students.
In the first section on Black Futures edited by Cox, contributors amplify past and present experiences of Black artists and suggest pathways forward while in the second section on Freedoms that I edited, contributors consider how the pursuit of freedom has impacted Black artists’ processes, working conditions, and outputs. The artwork on the cover of the special issue was created by Omar Hopkinson.
Black Performance in Canada Issue 45.2, edited by me, is the first special issue on Black theatre and performance practices ever published in the peer-reviewed bilingual journal Theatre Research In Canada/Recherches théâtrales au Canada.
The articles examine a range of performance contexts and practices with analysis of how Black performance can and does exist in places including museums, sites of worship, outdoor festivals, historic sites, street protests, and regional theatres. While the forum pieces draw from artistic expertise to consider what is at stake for theatre and performance practitioners and the audiences who engage with their art.
